10 Steps to Prepare to File a for a Military Divorce in Virginia

The military divorce process involves many steps and can be a bit confusing for someone not familiar with the laws. Our free Virginia military divorce guide can help you get acquainted with the legal aspects of ending your marriage.

Before you start the divorce process you can prepare by completing these 10 steps:

  • Consult an attorney. This should be done before you take any other steps.
  • Write a brief history of your marriage for your attorney, citing all vital information like the date of your marriage, birth dates of children, any prior separations, etc.
  • Gather all the documentation you need to show what you own and what you owe, including marital and separate property.
  • Create a list that includes the assets you'd like to keep and those you could let go. Consult a financial professional to determine your best options.
  • Transfer your share of any joint accounts into a separate account under your name.
  • Set aside some money to use during the beginning of your separation.
  • Pay bills and credit debt from money in joint accounts before you separate. That way you won't be saddled with them yourself afterward.
  • After separating, notify creditors that you'll no longer be liable for your spouse's debts.
  • Before separating, open a post office box in your name.
  • Look into various career options and begin to imagine your life after divorce. This can be a scary time, but it can also be a time of great opportunities.
