3 Post-Divorce Parenting Mistakes to Avoid after Getting Divorced in Virginia

Parents who are getting divorced in Virginia should make plans to cooperate on their parenting plan. When you're adjusting to your Virginia child custody arrangement, your kids will need extra attention and love, as well as boundaries and guidance.

The following are some common mistakes to avoid while you're parenting post-divorce.
  • Transferring your negative feelings for your ex onto your child. You love your child, but sometimes he or she might remind you so much of your ex that it causes you to inadvertently feel frustrated or lash out.
  • Overburdening. It's best not to burden your child with responsibilities or information only a grown-up should have. It may not always be easy to cope after getting divorced in Virginia, but it's important for you to seek appropriate support from adults who can help you through.
  • Using the children to spite your ex. While getting used to Virginia child custody arrangements, you might feel insecure or jealous of the time your child spends with your ex. These feelings cause some parents to act in negative ways, using their children as pawns to upset the other parent or as messengers or spies to transmit and gather information.
By putting your child's needs first, you can work through your challenges and create a loving nurturing parenting environment through the years after divorce.
