4 Rules to Follow When Texting Your Ex After Getting Divorced in Virginia

Texting, albeit a quick and convenient form of communicating with someone, can actually wind up getting you into trouble after getting divorced in Virginia. If you're going through a divorce in Hampton, a divorce lawyer can explain how to use texting and email appropriately with your ex and how to avoid common texting catastrophes.

Texting your ex can be beneficial sometimes, such as when you need to give quick, factual information ("I'm right on schedule and will be there to pick up Lucy at 6:00) or when trying to filter out anger and other emotions that may cause unnecessary strain.

It's a good idea to set a few ground rules before hitting the "send" button on your next text to your ex, such as:

  • Don't send out messages too frequently so that you don't appear to be a bully or a pest;
  • Don't use a text message to discuss heated or sensitive issues when a face-to-face discussion would be more appropriate;
  • Don't use it to give bad or unpleasant news to your ex; and
  • Don't type anything that you wouldn't want a judge or your children to see.
Words really can cause harm, so it's prudent to be careful with how you use them. When getting divorced in Virginia, it's best to avoid doing or saying anything that could come back to hurt you or your children in the future.

If you're in the midst of a separation in Hampton, a divorce lawyer is a good resource not only for handling all the legalities, but also for helping you understand your rights and entitlements and alleviating some of your worries.
