In an eggshell/oatmeal/beige/cream funk? Adding some pops of color to your decorating scheme can really liven up a living space, which is not a terrible idea considering you'll likely be spending more time indoors in the coming months. If your last foray into home décor still gives you shivers - that eggplant wall seemed like a great idea at the time! - we've got 4 tips to help you master color use in the home:

- Follow the 60-30-10 rule - Give 60% (wall space) to a dominant color, 30% (upholstery) to the second-tier color and the remaining 10% to the room's accessories.
- Balance is everything - You don't want one side of the room to dominate the other, so consider a power flow wherein the darkest colors live on the floor (for instance, a dark stain on a wood floor), with medium shades existing on the walls and the lighter paint shade used for the ceiling.
- Transition from one room to the next - Use one color to help transition from one room to the next. Say, for instance, your kitchen opens directly into your dining room. You could use a bold Cardinal red vase on the dining room table and match it to the hand towels used in the kitchen to create a nice cross reference.
- Think locally - Try referencing a locale or season when choosing a color scheme. For instance, maybe give a nod to our gorgeous Virginia coastline with soothing shades of blues, browns and green.
