5 Fun and Festive Holiday Ideas for the Home

Not in the mood to drag out those dusty, musty boxes of outdated holiday decorations from the attic this year? If your holiday décor could use a serious update - but you're not looking to blow your entire holiday budget on tinsel and trimmings - we've got 5 easy and economical ideas on fun and festive holiday ideas for the home

  1. Keep it simple and sophisticated - You don't need to transform your house from top to bottom to affect the holiday look. A few tasteful items in a limited color palette, say, silver and red, will go a long way to creating a cohesive holiday look.
  2. Light it up! - Use candles and votives to lend a romantic, soft feel to any room. Got little ones or pets that make open flames a serious hazard? Get a similar effect with battery-operated candles or by subbing out your regular light bulbs for a lower watt.
  3. The nose has it - Use scented candles, potpourri, or cinnamon brooms (available at many specialty grocers) to give your home an instant holiday scent. Company coming over? Pop some cookies in the oven a few minutes before their arrival.
  4. Switch things up - Giving your space a new feel can be as simple as rearranging the furniture in the room where you'll be spending most of your time. Move the couch to face the fireplace or the Christmas tree. Bring in more cozy chairs from another room; anything to lend that comfy vibe that says "holidays."
  5. Spread the love - Leave a touch of the holidays in every room like seasonal towels in the kitchen or a pine-scented candle in the guest bathroom. Those little touches throughout the house can have a big impact.
