Because of the recession, there has been an increase in the number of parents who are unable to make their child support payments because they have lost their jobs. In fact, the State of Tennessee reports that it has collected less in child support payments than last year; the first decline in child support payments in more than a decade.
Across the nation, other states are noticing the effect the poor economy is having on child support. In New York, the Family Court has been overwhelmed by child support modification requests by mothers and fathers who have recently been laid off. In some states, the noncustodial parent can be charged with contempt of court each time he or she misses a payment and may even be thrown in jail.
