Children with Divorced Parents Twice as Likely to Experience Stroke

January 3, 2011 - A recent study out of the University of Toronto indicates that children of divorce might have a higher risk of stroke. The study, referenced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services looked at a group of older Canadians who grew up in the 1940s and 50s. Participants whose parents got divorced were found more than twice as likely to suffer a stroke than those whose parents stayed together.

This is scary news for a parent facing Virginia divorce, but you shouldn't assume your divorce will cause health problems for your child.

The clinical study was conducted using older participants whose parents split up at a time when divorce was a social taboo. The stress of a divorce would have been compounded by the social stigma and lack of family and community support.

It's unknown whether the participants who had a higher risk of stroke were raised in homes where abuse, alcoholism or other harmful behaviors took place. These domestic conditions often were among the few acceptable reasons for divorce at the time, and growing up in a violent environment causes ongoing stress that can lead to health problems.

Poverty is also a risk factor for stroke and other health problems. Children of divorce, especially in past generations, were at higher risk of growing up in financial straits.

Children of divorce can suffer emotional stress that may eventually lead to health problems if gone unchecked. Fortunately, people divorcing today have access to good legal representation, community resources, and social support to help their children grow up healthy and well-adjusted.
