Coping When You’re Alone During The Holidays After a Virginia Divorce

Facing the holidays after a Virginia divorce can be emotional for any woman. You might have to attend events where family tension is thick, or talk to your children about the changes that have come to the family. While these things aren't easy, being alone during the holidays can be the most difficult part of divorce at this time of year.

Many women will find themselves spending at least part of the holiday season alone after a Virginia divorce.
If you don't have children or if your children are spending time with your ex, you will have to face the reality of an empty house.

If this is the case, you have plenty of options, some of which are listed below:

  • Get out of the house when you can - spend some time with friends or treat yourself to dinner and a movie.
  • Work on a hobby - or, consider reading or pampering yourself with a spa day at home.
  • Think ahead to the future - make realistic plans for where you'd like your life to go when your Virginia divorce is finalized.
  • Call your children - if your child custody arrangements don't allow for you to be together through the entire holiday, give your kids a call to share your love.
  • Consider re-working your visitation arrangements - if possible, arrange your child custody agreement so that you can all share the entire holiday together as a family, provided your divorce has not been acrimonious. This can help you avoid lonely holidays in the future. It might be a bit awkward at first, but if you and your ex can get along for a short period of time, it might be the best move you can make for yourself and your children.
