Counseling for Children after a Virginia Divorce

When you're parenting after a Virginia divorce, you may decide to facilitate your child's emotional healing on your own, by providing him or her with a comforting routine, verbal reassurance, and opportunities to express feelings.

It's important, however, to keep the option of professional counseling open
. There are things to consider when contemplating professional counseling for your child after Virginia divorce:
How are you coping? Parenting after Virginia divorce can be stressful, and there's no shame in having a normal human reaction to the grief and upheaval divorce can bring. You may not feel able to fully address your child's pain while you're still reeling from your own.
How is your child relating to you? Sometimes, kids direct their anger about the divorce toward their parent. Or, they may feel the need to hide their pain from you in order to not worry you. Both these scenarios can cause them to pull away and avoid communication. They might be more willing to open up to a neutral party like a professional counselor.
Should your child show any signs of serious emotional distress, such as persistent stress-related health complaints, school difficulties, lethargy, or self-harm, you should pursue professional counseling as soon as possible. Your child's pediatrician can refer you to a qualified counselor in your area.
