Divorced in Virginia: What to do with Marriage Stuff

When you’re divorced in Virginia, you may feel the need to deal with the material reminders of your marriage. Sorting out memorabilia can be a way of coping after divorce, because it brings closure to the painful event and allows you to look to the future.

Some divorcees keep all or most of the physical items from their marriage, while others prefer to let these items go. Your approach to change and your grieving style will dictate the way you handle these choices. Sometimes, it's not very easy to decide what's best.

One possible approach involves finding a happy medium, keeping some items and sending others on their way. For example, you can choose 2 special items to hold on to. These can be wedding souvenirs or other items. One of these will be the “keeper”, or, in other words, a souvenir of your married life.

Next, choose an item that you can use to symbolically let go of your marriage. You can do this by burning or burying the item. Some women choose to do this as part of their divorce party or as a personal ritual used as a means of coping after divorce.

Finally, take the remaining items and dispose of them however you want. You don't have to throw everything away; some items can be donated to thrift stores where they can bring happiness to others, while you move on to your new life after a Virginia divorce.
