Explaining Your Virginia Divorce to Your Grandchildren

When going through a later life divorce in Virginia, it may be necessary to speak to your grandchildren about the end of your marriage. Although it is likely that your grandchildren have friends who have divorced parents or grandparents, hearing that their own grandparents are getting divorced can be quite a shock. However, you may be able to lessen the impact of your divorce by following the guidelines below.

Choose a time that you, your estranged husband and your grandchildren have ample time to sit down and have the conversation without distraction. Having your children in the room may help your grandchildren feel more comfortable and can help you answer any questions your grandchildren may have.

You should create an age-appropriate explanation to give to your grandchildren about your Virginia divorce. It can be as simple as "Grandpa and I are going to live in separate houses now. We love you very much, and will always be there when you need us." Grandchildren may worry that they won't see you anymore when you are divorced. Reassure them that this is not the case; however, you will see them separately from their grandfather.

After your explanation, ask your grandchildren if they have any questions. They may ask you the reason for the divorce, and what impact it will have on them. While you should answer these questions honestly, take great care not to talk negatively about your ex-husband.

Remember that a later life divorce has an impact on both your older children and your grandchildren. Knowing how to properly explain your Virginia divorce and help your children to adapt is important to keeping good relationships with your family. The decision to file for divorce usually comes at the end of a long and painful journey. In addition to the emotional turmoil involved, there's also a lot of fear and uncertainty about what the future holds. Concerns about dividing pensions, mortgages, and even just paying the bills or buying groceries can easily become overwhelming.

A Virginia divorce attorney at Hofheimer/Ferrebee can examine the specifics of your case to help you decide how much support to ask for and how to fairly divide your marital assets.
