Gaining Custody of a Homeschooled Child; the Socialization Debate

If you have chosen to homeschool your child, you will likely hear one main opposing argument; children who are homeschooled cannot have a healthy social life. Such arguments can only become more heated during a Virginia child custody dispute. Luckily, there are many studies in the social health of homeschooled children. One such study was documented by Dr. Susan McDowell in her book, But What About Socialization?

The Studies of Dr. Susan McDowell

After researching 24 clinical studies, McDowell came to the conclusion that the socialization of homeschooled children is a "non-issue" in today's world. With a Ph.D. in educational leadership, McDowell is an expert in the field. And as an expert, she sees no need for anyone to be concerned for the social welfare of homeschooled children now or in the foreseeable future.

There exist many "non-school" extracurricular activities and social networks of which your child can become a part. These include:

  • Sports teams;
  • Homeschool groups (which can be found easily on the Internet); and
  • Extracurricular groups such as Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts.

Technology, of course, is opening new social doors every day. Between cell phones, the Internet, and cell phones with Internet access, it is increasingly easy for a child or teen to develop and maintain social connections, both locally and around the world.
