Helping Your Children Through a Same-Sex Divorce

Raising children is a challenging part of life for anyone, whether they are coupled, single, gay or straight.

One of the most important strategies for raising healthy, happy kids in any family is to give them a sense of belonging in the family unit and connection to the larger community. If you are currently separating from your partner, your children may be experiencing the same feelings as children of heterosexual couples when parents decide to divorce.

More than ever, this is a time for both you and your partner to show your child (or children) that they do belong and are supported by both parents. This may include:

  • Attending events and visiting vacation spots that are gay-family-friendly.
  • Having a few age-appropriate books on hand that features same-sex parents as well as addressing issues such as same-sex divorce.
  • Communicating openly and honestly with your kids when questions arise about your separation and what life will be like after you and your partner separate.

If you find your relationship with your partner on the decline and are considering breaking up, you might want to consider family therapy. A family therapist will get you and your partner communicating more effectively and possibly help you see things from a different perspective.

Even if the relationship cannot be saved, you will at least be making strides toward a healthier and more amicable parting that is better for you, your partner and your children.
