Holiday Feast Makeover: 5 Healthy Recipe Substitutions

Getting ready to host a holiday feast, but you or one of your guests is facing dietary restrictions? There's no reason a low-fat, low-sugar, or low-sodium holiday dish has to be any less inviting than the traditional preparation.

Below, we've got 5 easy swaps - as recommended by the Mayo Clinic - that you can make in your favorite holiday recipes. The results will be healthier, but just as tasty as the original!

  • Dry bread crumbs - a popular ingredient in casseroles and breaded meat dishes, you can kick up the flavor and trim the empty carbs by subbing in rolled oats or crushed bran cereal instead.
  • Iceberg lettuce - this dull leaf is low on flavor and practically non-existent when it comes to nutritional value. Try your favorite holiday salad with spinach, or for a real hearty taste, kale or arugula.
  • Seasoning salt - instead of sprinkling your potatoes with salt, try a mix of freshly ground pepper and dried rosemary instead. And pass on the garlic salt; choose garlic powder as an alternative.
  • Butter - applesauce is the go-to substitution for butter in many baked dishes, but feel free to experiment with prune puree as well!
  • Sugar - avoid a sugar overload in your baked goods by halving the sugar in your recipes and augmenting the flavor with a touch more vanilla extract, nutmeg, or cinnamon.
