Journaling as a Coping Strategy After a Later Life Virginia Divorce

Going through a later life Virginia divorce brings up many strong emotions. One way to handle these emotions is to keep a journal. Journaling can be a therapeutic experience for women recovering from a later life Virginia divorce because it encourages you to get in touch with your feelings and express them in a healthy and creative way.

Listed below are some tips on making journaling a part of your post-divorce recovery:

  • Purchase a notebook in a design that appeals to you. It doesn't have to be fancy; a discount store notebook works just as well as something more expensive. Or you can buy a plain journal and decorate the cover yourself.
  • Start writing! You don't need to be a world-class writer to keep a journal; it's all about the unique way you express yourself. How much you write each day is entirely up to you, and it will probably vary from day to day. It's usually best to commit to contributing something to the journal everyday or at least a few times a week.
  • While a journal's main purpose is to hold your written thoughts, there's nothing wrong with adding other meaningful items to it. Encouraging cards and emails from loved ones, verses from poetry and literature, photographs or images cut out from magazines...whatever you like.
  • Once you've been journaling for a while, go back and read some of your old passages. Everyone changes over time, especially when adapting to a life transition like divorce. By reading your old passages, you gain insight into how your thoughts and feelings have evolved. You might find yourself surprised by your own wise words.
