It is natural to feel concerned about how your divorce will impact your child, and the honest truth is that while it will not be easy, there are some valuable lessons that children of divorce glean from the experience.

You do not have to be unhappy. Although children often wish it was the case that their parents would stay happy and in love forever, learning that unhappiness is unacceptable is self-empowering and beneficial.

You do not need to be in a relationship to be happy and satisfied. Children of divorce often learn that they can be happy independently and that a significant other or life partner is not a necessary component in his or her life.

It is never too late to adapt. Maybe you had a particular routine that you adhered to when you were married, like Mom made the rules about bedtime and chores, and dad did the yard work. In your new, separate lives, your children can see you adapting – Dad will make the rules at his home, Mom will do her own yard work – and setting a positive example.

When You Need Help with Your Virginia Divorce

While your children may learn some valuable lessons, it is safe to say that there are certain things that you should learn before your divorce proceedings. Speak with an attorney about how to prepare for the next step in your life – 1-757-425-5200.
