Meeting Your Child's Emotional Needs After Your Virginia Divorce

It's common for parents going through Virginia divorce to have concerns about how the experience will affect their child's emotional health. Divorce is a stressful time for a child, but you can help lessen the strain by following some important tips for parenting after divorce.
  • Communication is important. You need to stay in communication with your child, making sure they know it's OK to talk with you about their feelings. Also, learn effective ways of communicating with your ex so you can co-parent efficiently.
  • Avoid trash talking your ex. When you speak badly about your ex, your child can take it personally and also feel that they have to choose between the two of you. This isn't fair to any child, so try and say only positive or neutral things when discussing your former spouse in front of your kids.
  • Be reasonable when it comes to visitation. You may have some difficult feelings when it comes to your children going to see your ex after your Virginia divorce, but it's best to encourage them to enjoy the time with their father.
Remember that when you're parenting after divorce, cooperation between you and your ex- spouse is important. Your child's security and happiness depends on it. You may have your disagreements on discipline issues or other matters but you should try to be open to compromise. Seek the help of a family therapist if necessary.
