Renewing Your Surroundings Following A Divorce

If you're considering a divorce in Virginia and you're seeking to get ownership of the marital home, you may need to have some coping strategies ready to help you in your post-divorce recovery process.

The family home was the place you and your ex-husband built your life as a couple, raised your kids, and planned for your future together. Now that future looks different from what you planned, and the home might end up being yours alone.

If this happens, you might want to take some steps to claim the space as your own;

  • Make sure all your ex-husband's belongings are out of the home. If there's anything left behind, ask him what he wants done with it;
  • Make the home your own. Start with the bedroom. You might want to add some more feminine or fun touches;
  • If you had a nasty break-up with your spouse, you might be tempted to remove pictures of him or take down other reminders. Think about how your kids will feel about this, and perhaps about how your own feelings might change as the years go by; and
  • Do only what you can afford to do. Just a few small changes can help you feel the energy of your brand new start. Everyone takes comfort in different ways. If you're happy with the home décor now, by all means leave it as is!
