Shaping Your Children’s Feelings About Money

Many couples who seek a Virginia divorce do so because of disagreements over money, particularly financial infidelity. Financial infidelity can be as heartbreaking as sexual infidelity, and it can affect your entire family, especially your children.

Financial infidelity often leads to issues of deep distrust in a relationship. If your children don't learn to talk about money in a healthy and productive way, they may face similar challenges in their adult relationships as you did in your marriage.

Children are very perceptive. It's likely they've heard disagreements about money between you and your spouse before and during your Virginia divorce
. Even if you kept your arguments private, they may have simply picked up the tense atmosphere surrounding financial matters.

After your Virginia divorce, you have the opportunity to build a new life. You're not destined to hand down the legacy of financial infidelity to your kids. If you set your mind to it, you can create a positive environment for your children to learn about money matters.

Books that address teaching children about money may be very valuable to you during this time. In addition, if you're seeing a family counselor, you may want to discuss your goals with him or her.

Financial infidelity usually stems from lack of communication. It's important that you encourage your children in open dialogue about finances.

Do what you can to remedy any unhealthy emotional reactions you might have regarding the topic of money, so your children can feel safe to speak about it openly with you.
