Talking To Your Children About Virginia Custody Arrangements

If you're a woman going through a Virginia divorce, you know how stressful and emotional it can be. Child custody issues are some of the most important and challenging aspects of your Virginia divorce because they affect the people you love the most: your kids.

If you and your spouse are seeking a Virginia divorce, you need to speak to your children about it. If there will be changes in your Virginia child custody arrangements, you need to prepare your kids for these changes as far in advance as possible.

Explain to your children the basics of the divorce and the facts of the custody arrangement. Always use age-appropriate language and make sure you don't say any more than necessary.

Don't trash your estranged or former spouse to your kids
. They don't need to hear that the gory details of why you and their father broke up; they just want to know what to expect in the coming months and they want to be reassured that everything will be OK.

Let them know what will be changing, but try to focus on anything that might be staying the same, even if it's the favorite toys they will be bringing with them when they move.

Your children will probably express a range of emotions before and after the Virginia child custody plan is implemented; you'll need to be strong for them and provide your love and support.

Therapy can be very useful to help children acclimate to the changes in their lives after a Virginia divorce.

At Hofheimer/Ferrebee, we understand that the health and happiness of your children is your #1 concern. We will work with you to address any fears and anxieties you may have about your children's future. Our women's-only divorce attorneys will guide you every step of the way to advocate that you achieve the best possible child custody and child support arrangements for you and your children.
