Telling Your Husband You Want a Divorce in Virginia

When you're having marital problems and feel that a Virginia divorce is your only option, you need to prepare to tell your husband you want a divorce.

When a relationship is on the rocks, both partners may know that the end has come but neither may want to be the one to say so first. It takes courage to be the person to initiate a Virginia divorce.

The first step to take when telling your husband you want a divorce is to choose the right setting. Pick a time and place where you can have privacy.

Remain calm and state the facts the best way you can. If you and your spouse made a habit of threatening divorce in the heat of disagreements, you'll want to show him that this time you've thought it over and aren't speaking in the heat of the moment.

Understand that your husband may react strongly. He may become upset and argue with you or storm out. On the other hand, he might act contrite and ask for another chance.

If it's the latter, you need to remain logical and decide whether his promises of reform will come to fruition and whether you truly want to try to salvage your marriage.

If you have ever been the victim of any type of abuse in your marriage, you should reconsider telling your husband you want a divorce face to face. Doing so may put you at risk for further violence. In these situations, it's best to get yourself to a safe location and let the Virginia divorce papers do the talking for you. Your Virginia divorce attorney may be able to suggest strategies that protect your rights and your safety.

Divorce in Virginia can happen for any number of reasons. Regardless of why your marriage is coming to an end, an attorney can work with you to establish a plan to address your most pressing post-divorce issues, such as financial independence and Virginia child custody.
