Tips for Handling Divorce-Related Stress

Although Virginia women have a wide range of legal options when it comes to a divorce, the process of dissolving your marriage can still be a stress-inducing experience.

A divorce is one of the top causes of stress among women because it threatens the thing we cherish most: the stability of our home and family.
However, divorce stress doesn't have to take over your life; it can be managed by taking some positive action.

Listed below are suggestions for coping with divorce-related stress:

  • Mind your meals. Eating well under stress may differ slightly from your normal diet. When you're going through a difficult time, you may be inclined to either overeat or not eat enough. Be mindful of your habits but don't pressure yourself to stick to a strict diet. Aim for simple healthy meals that make you feel good.
  • Get plenty of rest. Sleep problems are among the most common symptoms of stress. Take steps to make your room a sleep-friendly environment. There are also natural supplements available to help you rest.
  • Gather a support system. Having friends and family around to lend a listening ear can help ease some of the burden of divorce. If the circumstances of your divorce have put you out of touch with some key people in your life, you may find solace with a counsellor or a support group
  • Take a quiet moment. Meditation or quiet time can be incredibly helpful during a period of stress. Although being still may seem like doing nothing, in reality you are doing something vital for your well-being.

Taking care of your physical and emotional health is an essential part of a strategy that will help you come through your divorce strong, optimistic and ready to start a new life.

The decision to file for divorce usually comes at the end of a long and painful journey. In addition to the emotional turmoil involved, there's also a lot of fear and uncertainty about what the future holds. Concerns about children, mortgages, and even just paying the bills or buying groceries can easily become overwhelming.

A Virginia divorce attorney can examine the specifics of your case to help you decide how much support to ask for, what child custody arrangement will work best for you and your children, and how to fairly divide your marital assets.  Contact us today to schedule a legal consultation - (757) 425-5200.
