U.S. Divorce Rates Have Declined

If you're getting divorced in Virginia, you're probably more concerned about your own personal struggle than you are about statistics, but knowing some basic information about divorce rates can help you put things in perspective and plan for your future.

In the 1970s, it seemed the institution of marriage was in serious trouble. Traditional gender roles were re-examined, and women entered the workforce in record numbers. These social and economic changes, along with more relaxed divorce laws, led to skyrocketing divorce rates among American couples.

Fast forward to today. Marriage is alive and well, and the U.S. divorce rate has actually dropped steadily since 1996 for multiple reasons. The social upheaval of the '70s has simmered down; couples have many more resources to help them learn effective partnership skills; and people are waiting longer to tie the knot.

While the U.S. divorce rate is decreasing, some couples will find themselves in circumstances that warrant a divorce. If you're getting a Virginia divorce, you should know that you are not alone.
You should also know that your divorce is likely to go much more smoothly when you have an experienced attorney on your side to stand up for your best interests.

The decision to file for divorce usually comes at the end of a long and painful journey. In addition to the emotional turmoil involved, there's also a lot of fear and uncertainty about what the future holds. Concerns about children, mortgages, and even just paying the bills or buying groceries can easily become overwhelming.

A Virginia divorce attorney at Hofheimer/Ferrebee can examine the specifics of your case to help you decide how much support to ask for, what child custody arrangement will work best for you and your children, and how to fairly divide your marital assets.
