Virginia Child Custody: Child Coping with Absentee Father

When your marriage is over, you and your children may be facing changes that come with divorce and Virginia child custody arrangements. If you're the custodial parent, your kids may need time to adjust to the loss of their father from the home.

While parenting after divorce can be a challenging experience, it can also be one that brings your family closer.

  • Be honest with your children. Talk to them about the changes that are taking place in your lives and what they can expect. Kids are often upset by a change in routine, but preparation and reassurance can help ease the transition.
  • Encourage your children to talk to you. Communication is an essential part of successful parenting after divorce. Your kids may be going through some heavy emotions and need a loving, non-judgmental and supportive parent to hear them out.
  • Avoid insulting talk about the ex in front of the kids. It can be hard to control your emotions during such a challenging time, but it's best to explain their father's absence in a neutral way so that you don't inadvertently put them in the middle of the drama.
  • Take care of yourself, too. Find a support system of trusted friends and family you can vent your feelings. You can also seek the services of a licensed family therapist who can help you and your children through the challenges of Virginia child custody arrangements and other emotional aspects of divorce.
