Virginia Child Custody: Strategies for Easier Co-Parenting after Divorce

Parenting will change in many ways post-divorce. Your Virginia child custody attorney will handle the legal aspects of your case, but you and your ex will need to create a parenting plan that will build a healthy emotional foundation for your child after a Virginia divorce.
  • Put family first. You and your ex may not be the best of friends, but try to work out an agreement so that you can present a united front when it comes to parenting.
  • Encourage togetherness. Don't try to sabotage your child's relationship with your ex. It’ll only serve to make tensions even worse and will be damaging to your child.
  • Stay in communication with your ex. It's important to stay abreast of any changes going on and to update each other about any concerns you may have regarding your kids.
  • After your divorce, understand that a child may try to take advantage of the situation and manipulate you and your ex in some ways. Children will sometimes do this to get attention or gifts. Don't cast blame on your child, but do set boundaries.
  • Be respectful when talking with or about your ex in front of your child. There can be a lot of emotional upheaval surrounding divorce, but keeping your children safe and healthy should be the top priority.
Working together, you and your ex can learn to manage your Virginia child custody arrangement and move on to a full life after divorce.
