Overview of Virginia Child Support Services (Part B)

How a Virginia Child Support Attorney Can Help

In addition to all the resources available to you via the Social Services Department, your Virginia child support attorney will also be a source of valuable information
. Talk to your attorney about what your own obligations are in a child support dispute and what you need to do to demonstrate that your ex is not fulfilling his financial obligations. An experienced Virginia child support attorney will be familiar with cases like yours and understand the types of questions that a concerned mother may have about maintaining financial stability.

What happens if my ex keeps avoiding making his payments?

Not long after your Virginia child support attorney files for a child support lien, if your ex continues to avoid child support payments, they may be incarcerated
. Although that would be the just result, it doesn't help out either parent and it can certainly have a negative impact on your child.

Ultimately, you need the funds to raise your children. In 2008, the Virginia Child Support Enforcement Program (VCSE) was awarded the right to enforce monitoring NCPs to maximize payments to you and keep the delinquent parent from jail.

Basically, the VCSE will help the non-custodial parent to:

  • Obtain employment
  • Secure housing
  • Begin training for a vocation

In essence, the VCSE will methodically remove the barriers from successful child support payments.

Services to Use in Conjunction with Your Virginia Child Support Attorney

Through the DCSE, you can now check the state's cell phone records to locate a non-custodial obligor who hasn't been paying child support. Virginia is the first state to subpoena cell phone records to locate delinquent NCPs. Four times a year, on an automated schedule, it pairs its database of NCPs with the cell phone records from these phone companies.

Other things available to you via the DCSE:

  • Customer call center
  • Most-wanted database
  • Medical support
  • Early intervention services
  • Parent education
  • Development of parenting plans
  • Supervised visitation

The purpose of these programs is to increase the quality of living for you and your children. Sometimes, you can't do it all on your own and that is why the Department of Social Services and your experienced Virginia child support attorney are here to help.
