Child Support Enforcement in Virginia (Part B)

If the noncustodial parent does not receive a paycheck on a regular basis (i.e., self-employed or works for commissions), DCSE can still collect Virginia child support payments.

The agency can enforce Virginia child support by:

  • Placing liens on personal or real estate property.
  • Intercepting federal and state tax refunds.
  • Reporting past due child support payments to a credit bureau, thus affecting the deadbeat parent's credit score.
  • Seizing assets such as stocks, bonds, CDs, savings accounts, or retirement funds.
  • Suspending the noncustodial parent's driver's license or any occupational license.

If the noncustodial parent refuses to comply even when faced with DCSE enforcements, your Virginia divorce attorney may contact the court for stronger child support enforcement in Virginia. If the court finds your ex-husband in contempt, he may be sentenced for up to a year in jail.

Tracking Down Deadbeat Parents in Virginia

On the DCSE website are the names and photographs of the "Child Support Most Wanted" noncustodial parents who have neglected to make their Virginia child support payments. This list is also published in local newspapers in an effort to track down the offenders. The information for the deadbeat parents comes from the Department of Motor Vehicles and includes photographs, height, weight, occupation, and the amount of child support owed.

In addition to the wanted posters and newspaper ads, the DCCSE also finds parents through the Federal Parent Locator Service, which tracks people by their cell phone and cable television bills.
