How to Help Your Children Cope with Divorce (Part B)

Behavioral Changes in Children of Divorce

Every person-adult or child-processes stress, grief, anxiety and sadness in a different way. Therefore, the effects of divorce on children will vary depending on their age, level of maturity, what their relationship with you and your spouse has been, in addition to their personality and a number of other unique factors. Not all children of divorce will be affected the same way.

Some children of divorce cope remarkably well with the situation. Other children may experience great emotional difficulty. Below are a few behavioral signs that may indicate that your child is having difficulty processing this life change:
  • Depression
  • Moodiness
  • Acting out in ways never before seen
  • Grades in school begin to fall
  • Beginning to use alcohol or drugs
  • Sexual activity
  • Rebellion, oppositional behavior

Many times, the way your Virginia divorce will affect your child will depend on how you handle the entire divorce process. If you maintain (or at least project) a reasonable level of calmness and normalcy, it will help your children to better cope with the changes.

Emotional Effects of Divorce on Children

Children of divorce will experience a variety of emotions. Never make the assumption that a child who doesn't outwardly react has not been affected by the situation. Some children may not want to or be able to show their feelings. Know that deep down, there are feelings that may take time to come to the surface.

No matter how your child reacts emotionally, try to sympathize with them. Don't dismiss their feelings or tell your child they shouldn't feel a certain way. Encourage your children to be honest about how they are feeling. Allow them to express their thoughts. Some children will be angry or hurt. Other children may even feel a sense of relief, particularly if they have lived in a home with lots of turmoil.

You must also expect that some children will mourn the loss of this relationship. Some children will grieve as one would a death. Allow your child to go through this process while providing support and letting them know both you and their other parent love them.

At Hofheimer/Ferrebee, we understand that the health and happiness of your children is your #1 concern. We will work with you to address any fears and anxieties you may have about your children's future. Our women's-only divorce attorneys will guide you every step of the way to ensure that you achieve the best possible child custody and child support arrangements for you and your children.
