When Female Military Members Seek a Virginia Divorce (Part A)

Are you a woman serving in the military and considering a Virginia divorce? If so, you're not alone. Military women face higher rates of divorce than civilian women, and they're twice as likely to divorce compared to their male military counterparts, according to a March 17 article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Being in the military places some unique stressors on a marriage, regardless of which partner is serving. There's the emotional upheaval of deployment and frequent moves, the increased risk of adultery, and the possibility of physical and mental problems resulting from war experiences.

Why are divorce rates higher for military women?

When the female partner is the service member, the couple faces some unique challenges. It's unclear exactly why the divorce rates are higher for military women, but it may have something to do with the work-family dilemma that faces women from all walks of life.

A marriage between a military man and a civilian woman is a more traditional picture that receives greater recognition and support from society than a situation in which the tables are turned. While the military is making strides toward equality between the sexes, society in general still holds many outdated notions when it comes to gender in relationships.

In a marriage where both partners are working, the female partner is expected to handle the home front as well as job responsibilities, and in a work environment as demanding as the military, attempts at doing so can put a strain on a marriage.

Women who choose the military as a career are often very independent individuals, and non-traditional, which might allow them to be more realistic and decisive about the fate of a troubled marriage.

In addition to this, many military women are married to men who are also serving. While this arrangement often works out because they understand each other's responsibilities, it can also add complications to the union that sometimes lead to a Virginia divorce.

Whatever the reasons you choose to seek a Virginia divorce, you should find an attorney with experience handling divorce for military women.
