Helicopter Parenting and Divorce in Virginia (Part B)

Behavior known as helicopter parenting is one of the issues with which a court might have concerns when deciding child custody in Virginia. Helicopter parenting got its name because of the "hovering" nature of the parents who practice it.

An example of a helicopter parent would be one who is overprotective of the child and creates a relationship in which the parent and child are best friends and confidantes.

Some experts believe that such relationships are not healthy. For one, they can hinder the child's independence and ability to learn from their own experiences. Also, parents in this type of situation may live through their child and easily become disappointed or angry when the child deviates from the life path for which the parent hoped and planned.

Because of the vital role a mother plays in her child's life, women are far more susceptible to practicing (or being accused of practicing) helicopter parenting.

Avoiding Helicopter Parenting

It can be frustrating to learn that such an accusation is even possible. Most parents hear from the start that forming a close bond with their children is a good thing. Does being an involved parent mean you'll be viewed as a helicopter parent?

Not necessarily. As long as you show that you allow your child age-appropriate independence and your child seems to be developing and thriving, there shouldn't be concerns about helicopter parenting in your case for child custody in Virginia.

Basically, the court prefers a parent-child relationship that is fairly traditional; the parent sets clear limits and does not behave as the child's ‘buddy' or equal. This is the image you want to project during your Virginia child custody case.

When a child has special needs, a parent often has legitimate reason to be extra protective and advocate strongly for the child at school and in other group settings. In cases such as this, the court would take the child's needs into consideration and be less apt to label the parent's behavior as helicopter parenting.

If you're facing divorce and have concerns about helicopter parenting or other parenting behaviors that might affect your case for child custody in Virginia, you should discuss them with your child custody attorney.
