The Pros and Cons of Joint Physical Custody in Virginia (Part B)

Joint physical custody can have a number of benefits, especially if children share an equal amount of time with both parents. This ensures that each parent maintains a special relationship with the child. However, joint physical custody also has its share of challenges, which should not be overlooked by any parent considering pursuing this type of custody arrangement.

The Challenges of Joint Physical Custody

The biggest challenge of joint child custody involves disruption of the child's routine.
When you and your spouse were married, your child had a normal, comfortable routine that is now severely disrupted. While it's good that your child can spend time with both parents, having two separate houses can be difficult for a child, especially if it involves changing schools or being away from friends.

If you and your former spouse live far apart, especially in separate states, the disruption of the child's routine can be even more severe. This impact can be lessened if parents make an effort to ensure that the child has as consistent of a routine as possible.

If you and your spouse live near one another, ensure that your child can attend the same school and participate in the same activities they enjoyed before the divorce. Always make sure that your child doesn't feel as if he or she is forced to choose between their parents or give information on one parent to the other.
