About

  • Matt Hamel joined Hofheimer Ferrebee, P.C., because, in a lot of
ways, it reminded him of serving in the United States Navy. Hofheimer/Ferrebee,
like the United States Navy, is dedicated to a mission that is larger than
any one individual staff member. Each and every person in this firm is dedicated
to the successful mission of guiding women through what is arguably the
most difficult and emotionally traumatic time in her life.

Charlie Hofheimer has devoted much of his career protecting the interests
of thousands of women contemplating or confronting divorce or contested
custody cases. He is the co-founder of Hofheimer Ferrebee, P.C., along
with his wife of 45 years and paralegal, Diane Hofheimer, and their daughter
and attorney Kristen Hofheimer because they sensed a need to create a compassionate
community of professionals to assist in educating and representing
women as they navigate through the divorce process with a sense of confidence
and a feeling of support. Today, Hofheimer Ferrebee is an 8-lawyer firm, 100
percent dedicated to representing only women in Family Law.

Since 1990, Charlie has conducted monthly three-hour seminars on
"What Women Need to Know About Divorce." His seminar program, locally
known as "Second Saturday" has been recognized by the Virginia State Bar
for its outreach to the women of Virginia. Charlie has held numerous professional
positions including Chairman of the Family Law Section of the Virginia
Trial Lawyers Association for two successive terms, a founding member of the
Virginia College of Trial Advocacy, a founding member and past chair of the
Collaborative Divorce Solutions of Tidewater and Collaborative Divorce Solutions
of the Virginia Peninsula, founding member and a past chair of Virginia
Collaborative Professionals, a statewide organization promoting multi-disciplinary
team collaborative divorce, and an emeritus member of the Hoffman
I'Anson Inn of court. For the past three years, Charlie has been designated a
Virginia Family Law "Super Lawyer" by superlawyer.com ( a Thomson-Reuters
Company) and holds the highest rating "10" available by www.avvo.com

Before joining Hofheimer/Ferrebee, Matt served for six years on active
duty as a Navy JAG Attorney and he is still an active, drilling Navy JAG
Reservist. Matt served his first two years on active duty in the Navy's busiest
litigation office as a prosecutor and then volunteered for a tour of duty in Iraq
during the "surge". He was stationed on board Forward Operating Base Camp
Cropper in Baghdad, Iraq. He was attached to Task Force 134, which handled
Detainee Operations - and was responsible for the "parole-style" review boards
of the highest value detainees to include the former Ba'athist Party members
and "Deck of Cards" detainees. He then served the last few years of active military
service as the Staff Judge Advocate to the Commodore, Destroyer Class
Squadron and as the Assistant Force Judge Advocate to Commander, Naval
Surface Force Atlantic Fleet. He also served on hundreds of Case Review Committees
at Navy Fleet and Family Service Centers in Norfolk, Oceana, Little
Creek, Northwest Annex and Yorktown. He was blessed with the opportunity
to work with many wonderful social workers and licensed clinicians whose sole
purpose is to assist military servicemembers and their dependents through very
emotionally difficult, and oftentimes physically abusive relationships.

Matt knows what "divorce" feels like from a child's perspective...although
he was an adult-child when this occurred. His parents were divorced after 33
years of marriage - and the divorce occurred even after he, as the adult-child,
was married. This major family event was traumatic on him. This filled him
with a sense of compassion and understanding for children who go through this
process and also for the weaker party in a divorce case.

Representing women only in divorce and custody is much more than a
job for Matt and Charlie. It is a passion. And, this book, "What every Virginia
Military Wife needs to know about Divorce", is much more than a book. It is
our way to pay homage to military wives and female service members who
    serve our great country.
